MOTIVATIONAL QUOTE OF THE DAY

“Only those who risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.”                      -T.S. Eliot 1888-1965, Poet and Critic

MASTERS OF PHOTOGRAPHY- BOB CARLOS CLARKE  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MjeKhKjb8xQ  *******Robert Carlos Clarke (1950-2006) took great risks in his profession as a photographer.  He went outside the box and expressed his artistry in editorial work, fashion and advertising while becoming most well-known for his erotic photography.  You shouldn’t have to stick to the ’safe’ options to find your successful path.  Tried-and-true methods had to be tried before they were deemed true.  Besides, it’s not only boring to run with the masses, it’s boring to do only one thing for the rest of your life.  That’s just me though… ;)*******

WORD OF THE DAY

DISCOMFITURE

(noun)
[dis-KUM-fi-choor', dis-KUM-fi-chahr]

1. anxious embarrassment: “Everyone shifted in their seats as the discomfiture in the dining room grew.”

Origin:
Approximately 1325; from Middle English, ‘desconfiture’ (’discomfit,’ from Old French ‘desconfire’: to defeat, to destroy, from ‘des-’: not + ‘confire’: to make, to accomplish + ‘-ure.’)

In action:
“The Mutter was barely known to the general public when Ms. Worden, who grew up in nearby Media, Pa., and had a B.A. in physical anthropology from Temple University, joined the museum staff as assistant curator in 1975.

It turned out to be the only place she ever worked. When she became director in 1988, she set about expanding the Mutter’s holdings and increasing its attendance, to the discomfiture of some elected fellows, who worried that a more public Mutter would appeal to black-clad goth kids and freak-show revivalists with tattooed faces. (It did, along with families and school groups.)

An engaging and erudite eccentric with a public speaking voice somewhere in the Julia Child zone, Ms. Worden became the Mutter’s jolly avatar, rousing it from a dusty, almost secret jumble of curiosities that drew 5,000 visitors annually to one of Philadelphia’s best-known cultural institutions, attracting 62,000 visitors last year.”

John Strausbaugh. “A Curator’s Tastes Were All Too Human,” The New York Times (October 11, 2005).

JON STEWART ON CROSSFIRE  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aFQFB5YpDZE  *******WOW!!!  Talk about the growing discomfiture!  Even I was uncomfortable watching this clip!  This is the show that reportedly brought Crossfire down.  Jon Stewart laid down the law and Tucker Carlson looked like a fool trying belittle Jon Stewart by mocking The Daily Show  and comparing it to Crossfire and the like.  I guess he never expected to get caught in the ‘crossfire’ himself.  So sad.*******

MOTIVATIONAL QUOTE OF THE DAY

“Mother love is the fuel that enables the normal human being to do the impossible.”             -Marion C. Getty

STEVIE WONDER- HAPPY BIRTHDAY  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yYJPIZ-C-9c&feature=related  http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=4353  *******Stevie Wonder wrote this beautiful song in order to have Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday observed as a national holiday.  Well done Stevie!  It is my mother’s birthday today and I am dedicating this song to her.  Her love has fueled my tank for 30 years now and I am honored to have been raised by such a wonderful woman.  I know the shaping of a person’s character begins in the home and I thank God I was raised in her’s.  I was built on the solid foundation she laid out for me and I have been able to withstand trials and tribulations I know I couldn’t have withstood if it wasn’t for watching her go through the fire with nary a scar to show proof to non-believers.  To you Mommy, I am forever grateful for…YOU!!!  I love you my lady.  Happy Birthday!!! :)*******

MOTIVATIONAL QUOTE OF THE DAY

“When you know that you’re capable of dealing with whatever comes, you have the only security the world has to offer.”  -Harry Browne, Financial Advisor and Writer

DIANA KRALL- DEVIL MAY CARE  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GuZ6n7miSX0  http://music.yahoo.com/Diana-Krall/Devil-May-Care/lyrics/2034258#lyricstop  *******This is such a great song.  When you live life knowing you’ll be fine no matter what happens, the security you have within yourself will allow you to live a much happier, free-flowing life.  Depend not the world for peace of mind, but depend upon yourself and you’re bound to live each day to the fullest.  Fearing the dawning of a new day or banking upon the success of others will leave you helpless and unhappy.  Whatever happens, will happen–and you’ll roll with it when it does.*******

WORD OF THE DAY

BESET

(transitive verb)
[bi-SET]

1. to assail or attack from all sides: “The zebra was beset by leopards.”

2. to annoy continually or chronically

3. to surround or hem in; ‘the mountains which beset it round’ (Nathaniel Hawthorne)

4. to decorate something with jewels or other ornaments

noun form: besetment

Origin:
Approximately 1387; from Old English, ‘besettan’: to surround; of Germanic origin.

In action:
“Ms. Waitz was always lean during her running prime, her face sharply angled, and she looks much the same now despite the chemical mix trying to attack the disease. She says she is not beset by nausea nor is she especially weak, although her sense of taste vanishes for a few days after treatment.

‘The doctors are optimistic; I’m optimistic. I’m crossing my fingers,’ she says. ‘I will beat it.’

Ms. Waitz has one of her sport’s most imposing resumes. In addition to her New York triumphs, she won the London Marathon twice (1983, 1986), a world title (1983) and an Olympic silver medal (1984). All the countless miles of road work are now paying dividends in a different sort of endurance test.”

“New York City Marathon winner in the race of her life,” The Associated Press (November 6, 2005).

Motivational Quote/Word/Song/Videos of the Day- 17 Oct 2008

MOTIVATIONAL QUOTE OF THE DAY

“Anger will never disapper so long as thoughts of resentment are cherished in the mind.  Anger will disappear just as soon as thoughts of resentment are forgotten.”                         -Siddhartha Buddha

FORGIVE AND FORGET  http://www.youtube.com/user/0rchid33  *******I know it’s hard to forgive and it’s even harder to forget, but holding on to resentment is toxic to your soul.  I know this to be true from my own experiences.  I thought just the fact I had decided to forgive a person for their ‘wrongdoing’ was good enough, but I held onto the resentment and thought about the event often and was truly saddened each time I recalled it.  Then I read some of Radical Forgiveness by Colin C. Tipping (I plan on buying this great book) http://www.amazon.com/Radical-Forgiveness-Making-Room-Miracle/dp/0970481411/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1224284823&sr=8-2 and was astounded at how my life was affected because of the resentment I was holding on to.  It did me no good to say I had forgiven when I refused to forget.  I’ve since let go of the resentment and I feel so free.  I live by the motto “everything happens for a reason” and I know exactly why I had to experience what I did.  I ended up finding myself and became a much stronger person due to that experience.  What grudge are you holding on to?  Do yourself a favor and let it go.  I know it isn’t easy, but you’ll love the peace you’ll feel once you do.*******

WORD OF THE DAY

HETERODOX

(adjective)
[HET-ahr-ah-doks']

1. characterized by departure from accepted beliefs or standards; of or pertaining to creeds, beliefs, or teachings, especially religious ones, that are different from the norm (’orthodox’), but not sufficiently different to be called heretical: “The Church of Alexandria in Egypt is considered heterodox, not heretical.”

Origin:
Approximately 1619; from Greek, ‘heterodoxos,’ from ‘heteros’: the other + ‘doxa’: opinion.

In action:
“When theology erodes and organization crumbles, when the institutional framework of religion begins to break up, the search for a direct experience which people can feel to be religious facilitates the rise of cults. A cult differs from a formal religion in many significant ways. It is in the nature of a cult to claim some esoteric knowledge which has been submerged (or repressed by orthodoxy) for a long time but has now suddenly been illuminated. There is often some heterodox figure, mocked or scorned by the orthodox, who presents these new teachings. There are communal rites which often permit or spur an individual to act out impulses that had hitherto been repressed. In the cult, one feels as though one were exploring novel or hitherto taboo modes of conduct. What defines a cult, therefore, is its implicit emphasis on magic rather than theology, on the personal tie to a guru or to the group, rather than to an institution or a creed.”
Daniel Bell (b. 1919). U.S. sociologist, educator. The Cultural Contradictions of Capitalism (1976).

MIND CONTROL CULTS  *******It’s amazing how many people get caught up in cults.  It’s also quite sad because they prey upon people searching for love and answers to life.  This video is a bit long, but it explains the mind control process very well.  It’s strange, but I noticed some similarites to the hiring process at sports marketing companies.  They almost had me, but my gut told me to run for the hills!*******

Motivational Quote/Word/Song/Videos of the Day- 16 Oct 2008

MOTIVATIONAL QUOTE OF THE DAY

“Most people never run far enough on their first wind to find out they’ve got a second.  Give your dreams all you’ve got and you’ll be amazed at the energy that comes out of you.”            -William James 1842-1910, Psychologist, Professor and Author

ULTRA NATE`- GIVE IT ALL YOU GOT FEATURING CHRIS WILLIS  *******No matter what you are trying to accomplish–just having a hit is a feat.  Once the feat you’ve strived so hard to achieve has been accomplished, you may feel as if there’s nothing left to prove to yourself, or anyone else.  Does Tyler Perry or Donald Trump have anything left to prove to you?  I highly doubt they do, yet they’re still giving it all they’ve got well past they’re umpteenth wind.  Why?  Because you don’t just up and quit after succeeding for the first time.  You keep going until the passion is gone.  If it is a true passion, it will never, ever go away.*******

WORD OF THE DAY

ANOMALOUS

(adjective)
[ah-NOM-ah-lahs]

1. deviating from the general or common order or type; ‘advanced forms of life may be anomalous in the universe’: “I am not very worried about the anomalous readings we are getting on the heart monitor, but we should investigate them further.”
2. difficult to identify or classify; equivocal
adverb form: anomalously
noun form: anomalousness

Origin:
Approximately 1650; from Greek, ‘anomalos’: uneven, from ‘homalos’: even.

In action:
“[It is anomalous] to hold that in order to convict a man the police cannot extract by force what is in his mind, but can extract what is in his stomach.”
Felix Frankfurter. Associate Justice, US Supreme Court. [Unanimous opinion that reversed conviction of an alleged drug addict because evidence was obtained by forced stomach pumping.] (January 2, 1952).

Motivational Quote/Word/Song/Videos of the Day- 15 Oct 2008

MOTIVATIONAL QUOTE OF THE DAY

“Part of being a champ is acting like a champ.  You have to learn how to win and not run away when you lose.  Everyone has bad stretches and real successes.  Either way, you have to be careful not to lose your confidence or get too confident.”  -Nancy Kerrigan, Olympic Figure Skater

MICHAEL JORDAN “FAILURE” NIKE COMMERCIAL *******PERFECT!!!  I couldn’t have done this particular blog on a day when I need it more than I do today.  It is 3:25 p.m. and I have been working on this blog since 9 a.m.  I think my computer has a virus because the pages either wouldn’t load, or took what seemed like light years to load.  Then, I couldn’t find a good video for the song of the day.  I’m only writing this because six and a half hours later, I am victorious!  It was strange–all of a sudden, when I was about to go to the store (ha ha…it’s raining now…go figure!), everything started working and it all flowed together within 20 minutes!  See?  “Goonies never say die!” LOL  So many times, I wanted to just throw in the towel and chalk it up as a loss, but I just couldn’t quit.  That’s what made Michael Jordan a champ.  Watching this video made me want to scream, “YES!!!” at the top of my lungs, but we have thin walls in my building and I don’t want to be known as the crazy lady across the hall. ;)  Michael Jordan is a true champ.  He’s had bad stretches and true successes, yet he always remained the same–driven and humble.  Take note.*******

GOONIES NEVER SAY DIE (THE GOONIES DANCE MIX)  *******Goonies is one of my favorite movies of all time and this dance mix is great!  This just made my day!*******

WORD OF THE DAY

SCHISMATIC

(adjective, noun)
[siz-MA-tik]

1. of, relating to, or engaging in schism (discord, separation or division, especially into factions or within a church): “This one research finding will have a schismatic effect on our entire field of study.”
noun

2. someone who promotes or engages in schism.

Origin:
About 1456; from ’schism’; originally from Greek, ’schizein’: to split.

In action:
“Pope Benedict XVI had a ‘friendly’ meeting with one of his fiercest critics - dissident Swiss theologian Hans Kueng, the Vatican and Kueng has said.
Benedict granted a Vatican audience to Kueng, the latest indication that the Pope seems keen to reach out to prominent Catholics who fell from Rome’s grace during the last pontificate.

Last month, Benedict met with the head of the Society of St. Pius X, the schismatic traditionalist movement whose leaders were excommunicated under Pope John Paul II.”

Motivational Quote/Word/Song/Videos of the Day- 14 Oct 2008

MOTIVATIONAL QUOTE OF THE DAY

“Little minds are tamed and subdued by misfortune; but great minds rise above them.”         -Washington Irving 1783-1859, Author

SEETHER- RISE ABOVE THIS  *******This is such a great song.  I just watched this video for the first time and found out it is about suicide and was dedicated to Eugene Welgemoed 1981-2007 http://www.rapidcityjournal.com/articles/2007/08/15/news/local/doc46c3a98abc412980550084.txt.  Shaun Morgan, Seether’s lead singer and guitarist, is Eugene’s brother.  In no way do I think those that have committed suicide have little minds.  Life is not easy and sometimes it can be too much to bear when a light cannot be seen at the end of the tunnel.  I’ve been there and I thank God for my family and friends because I’m still here.  This quote addresses the misfortunes of life and how they should be dealt with.  Take the current state of the economy for example.  Left and right, people are just giving up or simply taking financial and job losses as if life has come to an end.  Although life as we’ve known it has come to a standstill, it doesn’t mean it’s over or will never return to it’s former state.  You just have to roll with.  Shop differently.  Name brands aren’t the holy grail and being able to dine out and buy whatever you want does not determine the measure of a man.  Not having enough actually teaches you what is really important to your survival.  These are your needs.  During these hard times; take care of your basic needs and stay calm.  Have a great mind and rise above this.*******

WORD OF THE DAY

ABERRANT

(adjective, noun)
[AB-ahr-ahnt, a-BER-ahnt]

adjective

1. markedly different from an accepted norm; ‘aberrent behavior’: “We would like to observe your children to pinpoint the source of their aberrant hostility.”

noun

2. one whose behavior departs substantially from the norm of a group

additional noun forms: aberrance, aberrancy
adverb form: aberrantly

Origin:
Approximately 1550; from Latin, ‘aberrant-,’ present participle of ‘aberrare’: to go astray, from ‘errare’: to wander, to err.

In action:
“True, these diverse communities identify with the same faith; but because of Islam’s inherent cultural pluralism, each brings with them an Islam that has developed over centuries in response to the environments of their respective homelands. Accordingly, Muslims in the diaspora are charged with reconciling countless varying, even conflicting, manifestations of Islam. For Muslims, this is historically an aberrant situation. The result is that almost every idea, from the most radical to the most conservative, is hotly contested among Muslim communities in places like Australia.”

Waleed Aly. “The making of Muslim Australia,” The Australian Age (October 23, 2005).

FABIO CAPELLO IS ANGRY!!  *******This is hilarious!!!  He beat up the two dudes next to him!  His reaction is a bit excessive, but aberrant for a sports manager?  Hardly.*******
